puppisAstronomers at the European Southern Observatory's La Silla telescope in Chile have discovered three medium-sized planets in the neighborhood of HD 69830, a star 41 light-years away. Located in the constellation Puppis (the Stern), the planets are in a system similar to our own.

The outermost planet is located just within the star's habitable zone making temperatures moderate enough for liquid water to form. Scientists believe this outermost planet has a solid core of rock, ice and covered with a thick layer of gas. It could be inhabited by an advanced race of penguins. But that's our theory not the scientists.

Based on their distances from their sun, the two planets nearest the star could have Mercury's hard rocky surface. The newly discovered planets' masses is about 10, 12 and 18 times that of Earth and almost the same as Neptune. They orbit  around HD 69830 every 9, 32 and 197 days more or less, respectively.  Do you like celebrating birthdays every nine days? We recommend you move to the innermost planet.

If you want to see what these planets look like, well. you just have to wait. The planets have not been photographed and were discovered via the Doppler, or "wobble," technique. This is where astronomers assume the presence of a planet by measuring the gravitational influence it exerts on its parent star. To date, 180 planets have been discovered using the "wobble".
